Accompanied by Princess Mabel and Countess Luana of Orange-Nassau, he set sail on the Groene Draeck, a historic sailing ship.
Des retrouvailles émouvantes
This Wednesday, August 20th 2025 will remain engraved in the memories as an exceptional day of reunions for King Willem-Alexander at the age of 58. He revisited several comrades he had crossed during his military service in the Royal Netherlands Navy in Den Helder on August 19th 1985 when he took his first steps at the Royal Naval Academy. One particularly memorable moment was his expedition aboard the HNLMS Urania.
The Royal House shared an touching photo: thirteen men about to turn sixty reconnected on the same waves forty years later. On board the Groene Draeck—the sailing ship offered by the Dutch to his mother Beatrix for her eighteenth birthday—they celebrated their enduring friendship.
Une journée sous le signe des traditions
The same day saw King Willem-Alexander participating in the SAIL Amsterdam alongside his sister-in-law and niece aboard a traditional Frisian lemsteraak sailboat. He was surrounded by Princess Mabel—the widow of Prince Friso—and Countess Luana of Orange-Nassau as they navigated towards one of the world’s most renowned maritime festivals.
The SAIL Amsterdam is organized every five years and this event was only able to resume after canceling the edition scheduled for 2020 due to the health crisis in 2025.
Les temps forts d’une fête maritime
King Willem-Alexander plans to attend various days of the festival this exceptional year marking not only its return after ten years but also an homage to his maritime beginnings.
The first day opened with a spectacular parade where thousands of small boats flocked to Amsterdam from Ijmuiden—undoubtedly a captivating spectacle for tourists present in the Dutch capital.
The final parade next Sunday is expected to be equally impressive and eagerly anticipated by all those who love navigating these historic waters.
In sum, this flamboyant return of the SAIL Amsterdam does not only thrill maritime enthusiasts; it also reminds us of the importance of the bonds woven over the years in our shared journey.
